I have been using Legacy almost exclusively for four or five years. I occasionally use RM (formerly FO). Before Legacy I used FTM which I revisited recently but dumped quickly. I have tried TMG a number of times but never stuck with it - I'm not patient enough.
If I were to pick a genealogy program for ...
strictly for the appearance of the user interface ... RM or FTM.
strictly the appearance of reports, FTM.
strictly for power and flexibility of data entry, management and reporting, TMG.
strictly for responsiveness to user needs/wants ... Legacy.
the best balance of the above attributes ... Legacy
That's why I use Legacy. Legacy comes nearest to the power and flexibility of TMG but in my opinion the user interface is a little dated and not as polished as I'd like. The reports all lack someting in appearance and/or formatting. I'm anxious to see if Legacy 6 will address some of those negatives.
Unfortunately, once you're committed to something with the power and flexibility of Legacy and use that power and flexibility, exporting to something lesser for improved output becomes an adventure, often a non-productive adventure in my experience.

I recently recommended Legacy to someone and received the following remarks. Would anyone care to comment, so that I can reply?
I know my answers, but I'm sure there will be better here!

Dear Rodney,
Thanks for your suggestion of Legacy. Have just loaded it and entered a GEDCOM file.
My first reactions after playing with it for an hour -
I can find no way to create extra note sheets - there are only three available - with fixed names that cannot be changed - General, Research and Medical.
Within the note sheets I cannot find a way to format text - bold, text colour, underline or italic.
The screen is very childish with its enormous lettering. I used 'customise' to try to change the font size but only the titles change not the data. The icons and buttons are enormous - they do not need to be as big as that - maybe that is what makes the screen look as if it is intended to be used by a seven year old. This large lettering means that if you enter a full address of the place where a person was born or died you can only see about the first 30 letters of it.
When you try to add more than 10 children to a family it creates a new list - you cannot see all the children at the same time - this is what I disliked so much about the old FTM.
It won't accept Chapman Codes as capitals - it turns them into a Cap + lower case.
True - it is simple to use. Maybe the deluxe version is better with more editing facilities and more note pages; I will have to look into that, but so far I do not think it has anything which would make me want to turn over to it.
But thanks for your suggestion
