hi
I use "unknown" for unknown spouses because I send my gedcom file to a Danish service* which compares it with others. When someone else has both spouses, I get the other's name, which I can check out for correctness.

Hi all,
Since certain people seem to think that we should not say anything negative about Legacy, I'll put this in the form of a warning: Although the "Help" for Set Relationships in Legacy states "The relationships are figured for the blood relatives of a source person.", Legacy does *not* get all the blood relatives. Specifically, in the case of a 1/2 sibling, where the other parent is not known (and therefore not entered), Legacy finds *no* relationship.
As an example, if your grandmother had a child with an unknown person other than your grandfather, this child is properly entered as linked only to your grandmother, and the space for the child's father is left blank, Legacy will *not* show the child (your 1/2 uncle or aunt) as having *any relationship to you.
If you enter the word "unknown" or something like "____" for the father, *then* you get a relationship. I do not feel I should have to clutter up my data with a bunch of "unknowns" - I only add people when I have *some* information about them.
This has been reported to Support, and reported again. Incidentally, tagging the entire ancestor line *will* catch this person. And the Relationship calculator shows the person as related correctly if he/she is on the left, but not if he/she is on the right (goes back a generation further in the second case).
In summary, don't count on the "Set Relationships" to catch all your blood relatives. Don't count on the Relationship Calculator to find the closest relationship.
