John,

Many will say this is a matter of personal preference. However, as a former
volunteer at a Family History Center I have seen dozens of patrons attempt
to submit names through Temple Ready for "unknown" ancestors because there
was a "name" listed, even though the name was unknown. In some instances
the surname is known but the given name is missing, so some submit names
such as; "unknown Jones" or "unknown Johnson"

I think it is better to leave the space blank so you will know the
information is missing and so you know further research is needed.
