Hmmmm... your scanner has a slide/film attachment, right? Does your scanner have instructions for using the slide mode? It sounds like maybe your scanner is scanning "normally" -- starting in the corner where the slide mount begins, not where the actual slide is located. And the backlight must be on for slides.
