I use alternate names for alternate spellings. I use the
surname title field for other things. IMO that's what the
fields were designed for. Here's an example from my file.
One of my maternal great grandfather's was known to her
and my uncle as "Justin Lafleur". I couldn't find this person
in any canadian records (he was from Quebec). I did eventually
find him under his "more correct" name of Justinen Biroleau
dit Lafleur. So in my database the main name for him is
Justinen - Given Name
Biroleau - Surname
dit Lafleur - Title Suffix
I also have an alternate name of
Justin - Given Name
Lafleur - Surname
for him.
The method of just putting alternate spellings of last names
into the Title Suffix is workable, but will cause problems if you
run into a lot of folks with titles in their names. This could include such
things as "Junior" or "III". IMO it's also not quite correct. To
me a different spelling is in fact a different name.
In your case the Barnard name may be found on any number of
records. Only on the tombstone is his name Bernard. You only
have one source that says that was his name. If you put the
Bernard name into the Title Suffix, you will now have sourcing
problems, will you not?
