I have done as you both suggested and I now know that they are two different people.

You can certainly do this with View > Split Screen without opening a new file as Jack says.
You can also do it by going to Manual Merge when focussed on one of them and choosing the other for the Right Side person.
Then you're in the right place to combine them if you decide they are the same person.
