Leon, I agree with you that the current structure has enough flexibility to meet people's needs for storing and sorting placenames. I think the outstanding issues are about presentation. Sorry Brendan - not the ned of it! <G>
The enhancements needed IMO, to try and summarise from memory an earlier very long thread, are: 1. More comprehensive use of Short Location Names in reports, web pages, exports to GEDCOM and screens so that additional commas do not display or print, or some other mechanism to address this issue. 2. A way of recording or linking alternative names of the same place, ideally with some sort of time reference to cope with changes over time. 3. Perhaps a more rigorous way of enforcing standard entry of locations respecting a user-defined standard for each country (say). Many have requested "boxes" to enter each part of a location, but I for one am not convinced that this would help with the diversity of name structures required, even in one country such as the USA, let alone internationally. The use and entry of commas seems to confuse many. An big advantage of the current system is that it supports very quick data entry, which is important. A disadvantage is that when creating new Locations, it's easy to create a non-standard format. I think a few months ago someone mentioned that Legacy are planning toa ddress this, so we should wait and see, I think.
