Hi,
Broadly speaking the principle remains the same throughout time and the detail constant until 1974, since when we have had more changes than a stripper. To go into full detail would just confuse matters and indeed confuses a lot of the people in the UK. I will, however, give three examples of the sort of things to watch out for when comparing old addresses with modern ones.
a) I was brought up in Eccles, Lancashire, England (a small town west of Manchester). In 1974 Eccles was merged into Salford and became a district of the City of Salford in a new county called Greater Manchester. So the address became Eccles, Salford, Greater Manchester, England. Some 20 years later Greater Manchester was abolished and the address now is Eccles, Salford, England.
b) I now live in Ashton-under-Lyne (east of Manchester). Until 1974 this was in Lancashire but then was incorporated into a new "metropolitan district" called Tameside. This comprised a number of towns from both Lancashire and Cheshire and was in Greater Manchester. On the abolition of Greater Manchester each town reverted back to their old addresses in either Lancashire or Cheshire but all are still in Tameside!!
c) I lived for a long time at an address in Glossop, Derbyshire, England. In 1974 a new authority called High Peak was created encompassing a number of towns and villages. This still exists so Glossop is now Glossop, High Peak, Derbyshire.
Changes like these with the creation and abolition of counties, parishes, districts etc happened throughout England, Wales and Scotland so care needs to exercised when comparing old and modern details. As I said this confuses us as well but the one thing that has not changed is that the old town names still exist in the address but there are likely to have been changes in the full addresses as illustrated.
I must confess that this causes some quite interesting mental debates when trying to decide what is the best address to use when entering them into Legacy!

That is super, Ron.
It's a great help laid out like this -- smallest to the largest unit. I imagine it applies throughout time?
