Carl:
I am assuming you have a Source assigned to several individuals and it is
assigned to the "Unspecified" Event on several individuals rather than say
the "Name" Event for sourcing. I had this happen when I imported a GEDCOM
file and the master source (thru my negligence) was assigned to everyone in
the GEDCOM import to the "Unspecified" source event for - I would guess that
same thing may have happened to you.
If this is the case, then here is a quick way to fix the problem. Note: I
will not give all the key strokes here, but will tell you the steps.
Assume there is one Master source called "Book A" that has been assigned to
the Unspecified Event for several people in your file and that is the only
Source event field it appears in - this is a big assumption - please verify
before doing the following).
0. Backup or make a copy of your current database before doing steps
1-8!!!!!!!
1. Go to Master Source and find the source called "Book A"
2. "Show List" which creates a list of everyone that has source "Book A"
3. Tag everyone in the list with Tag 1 (Clear all tags before doing this)
4. Create a New Source Called "Book A - New" that has all the same
information as Source "Book A"
(We are going to assign this new Source to the Name field for all Tag 1
records")
5. Go to Tools, Advanced Sourcing
A. Under Tab "Which Records to Use", Select Tag 1
B. Under Tab "Where to Assign the Citations", Choose
1) Specific Fields
Say you want to assign source to "Name" field only,
then check "Name"
Note: You can assign this new source to any or all of
the fields - your choice
6. Click "Source Clip Board"
A. Click "Set", and browse to your new Source -- "Book A - New"
B. Click "OK"
C. Click "Apply"
We have now assigned the new source "Book A - New" to all your previous Tag
1 records which is the same records that has the old source "Book A"
assigned to the "Unspecified" source Event.
7. Now, so to Master sources and Delete the old Source "Book A" for all
records.
8. Go to the Master Sources and rename you new Source "Book A - New" back to
the correct name - "Book A"
This works for me and saves lots of time.
Good luck

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Unspecified Events
I have almost 10,000 people in my files, It has re assigned unspecified to
many of my files that had a proper source assigned to them. I have to go
back and click each file and move the source back to the specific event.
Exp. I assigned a source for a book in which I find the name of a person.
Much later I am looking at information near this person and so as I scroll
through I find they have all been reassigned the source from Name Event as
found in the book to Unspecified. Now I have I dont know how many thousand
like this and it is a nuisance to have to go back and change every one.
If there is nothing I can do to get rid of this then that is it I will
suffer through it.
