Hi Ken,
Re the first part of your query - whenever you add a child to someone,
Legacy creates a "marriage". In Options > Customise - Data Format tab, you
have the option of the unknown partner being shown as Unknown or blank.
In the marriage information screen you can choose the appropriate wording
for reports. To pick up the alternate wording you have to use "unmarried"
as the Marriage Status.
This works better in some reports than in others.
When Legacy 5 was first released there a thread on this list with Dave
Berdan suggesting introducing an invisible option as well as a private
option. This idea doesn't seem to have gone any further. I suspect, if it
could be implemented, it would solve a lot of non-standard situations.

Is there a way to get Legacy to correctly show a single unmarried parent
as an adoptive parent? My situation is I know both the biological parents
and the adoptive parent of my ancestor. When I enter the biological
parents as the first set of parents and then try to add the adoptive
parent as a second parent, Legacy insists on assigning a marriage event to
an "Unknown" for the other adoptive parent. The program will not allow me
to either delete the "Unknown" or to disolve the marriage relationship
between "Unknown" and the single parent.
