Hi Gary,

It is worth knowing wrt UK BMD's that civil registration only started in July 1837 and was not mandatory until 1875. Even then not all people registered births (and may have used false names!!)

Parents have 2 months in which to register a birth and the indexes show the date of registration and *not* the dob. Thus a birth registered in Feb 1886 have actually have been in Dec 1885. There is no legal requirement for the child to have their father's surname either.

Karen,
I believe that the way the BMD index register works is that all registrations (from Churches, Courts, etc.) within a District are gathered up after the end of the quarter and compiled into an index for that particular District. It may be done differently but every case where I have obtained the actual certificate, the real dates fall within the bounds of the referenced quarter. Late registrations do seem to be handled differently, some seem to go into the quarter when the actual registration was made while others have been added (often hand written) at the bottom of the applicable index page of the quarter in which the BMD occurred. In earlier years many BMDs were never registered which just add to the fun.
