Hi again,

Going back to Carol's original question, I had asked months ago that Legacy make IndexView sortable on any chosen data item(s), which I feel is a major defect not only in Legacy, but all the other gen-apps I've tried. I am speaking about sort capable via Access or most any DBMS.

Legacy responded that such would require an upgraded replacement of some major component, and we didn't get enough noise here on LUG to get any further. Thus, we're limited to sorting on RIN, surname, or given name, and that's "end of story" at least for now. Alternatives are to open the file in MSaccess (expensive) or GedView (great but doesn't accomodate editing data, so it's all more of the very tedious back/forth/between work).

For myself, it may mean that, as I lucked out and got Access on an late-acquired used laptop, I may resort to using Access in order to continue my work on finding the families which surely exist within my "islands". I continue to feel that we badly need what you request!

Good luck to us all!

Is there a way I can have people listed in Index View first by Name then by Birth Date order?

In most of my families I have some individuals who have the same given and surname; in one family I have 125 men with the same two names. In Name List they are shown in birth date order; but in Index View they are not - they are all over the place.

I can go more easily from Index View to the Edit Person screen for each individual than I can from Name List so I use it more often than Name List before adding a person of the same name [ to check whether they may already be on my data base]

Carol,
In the Index View, right click the table header that begins with RIN, Surname etc. From the Customise Index View Columns dialog, select an empty field and click the elipses at the end of it and in the next dialog, select the field you want. There are nine different fields you can choose from.

I was able to select surname for one field, christian names for another. Select and delete field names you don't want, and use the up/down arrows to manipulate the fields to the position you want.

While you are at it, when you have the fields in the position you want, click the [Save] button and save the layout with a significant name. You can save ten different layouts. When done, click the [Close] button.
