Correct me if I'm mistaken, but you seem to be implying that a beta version was released at the conference. If so, I hope the buyers, at least some of
Then I'll correct you. <grin>
There is a big difference between what a company can view as a beta product and what they view as "wide release" product. IF Millennia did what I explained (and we have no information to suggest they did or didn't) then it didn't have to be beta software. Millennia could have every intention of releasing this software "wide" but just wanted to take their time and be sure.
Remember, companies like Millennia are not Microsoft. They don't have the resources to have thousands (if not tens or hundreds of thousands) of people looking at their software before release. MANY companies do this in stages when the opportunity presents itself. I owned a third-party QA (quality assurance, ie., beta testing) company for 13 years. It was far from uncommon for companies to do this. Game companies do it all the time, for example.
They have their internal people test a release. They have the beta testers test the release. If it's a big release (and something noted as 6.0 sounds potentially big) then they may very well release what they believe to be finished product to a small somewhat controlled group of people. The fact that they released it at an industry event underscores the last part. Thus, if their HOPE and HUNCH is correct, and the product shows itself to continue to be stable, it can then be released. If something crops up that came out of releasing it to this somewhat wider group (wider than their internal/beta team) then they MAY have cause to re-think wider distribution. They can then make any necessary changes and call the new release 6.0 or 6.01 or 6.0 build xxx.
The bottom line is simple. It is not currently available to the audience at large. It appears, from all signs, that Millennia is rather close to releasing something here so this discussion will be a non-issue soon enough, or so we can hope. If we get to November and we're still waiting, then I'd start to question Millennia's processes, talent, etc. Until then, nothing is out of the ordinary here.
