John,

"That may be, but I've NEVER been to a library that wouldn't allow them. In
fact the Genealogy Society library I frequent accomodates them by having
separate desks with power hookups! If I went to a library that didn't allow
them, I'd complain to the person telling me to take it out, that their
library should enter the 20th century! It is after all now the 21st
century! If I was feeling really snippy I'd ask to have a chat with the
head librarian."

Where are you located? It may be a difference between regions... You've
actually got it backwards with how things seem to be going here... used to
be there never was a problem with Laptops in the libraries, but they are now
heading the other direction by not allowing them. (Kind of like not
allowing briefcases and backpacks because of the potential for people
stealing books... However I have no idea what the issue is with laptops)

"However, I've had problems reading the screens on some of those pocket
appointment keepers too -- even indoors!"

Not sure what devices you're looking at or how old they are... All of the
new devices (the last 3 or 4 years I would say) have reflective screens.
When you are outdoors you turn OFF the backlight and try to position the sun
so that it fully shines on the device screen... They are very readable. (At
least compared to a laptop, totally different technology... Laptops screens
"Wash out" in direct sunlight)

You're right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and preference.
Stick with what works for you.

Kevin
