Sorry, I did not make clear that I have also changed the default
Windows My Documents directory to start from the Root directory,
In my case I keep all my data on my D: Drive so the full path to
the pictures directory structure is D:\My Documents\Legacy
Data\pictures\xxxx where xxxx is the directory for one of either
my maternal or paternal lines. I do not have multiple users on my
computer so that works for me.
When I do share the files I simply tell the recipient what my
structure is. I prefer that to having hundreds of pictures in the
same directory and having to come up with a unique name for the
pictures of the many Jonathon Kellys in my paternal line. When
each is in a separate directory with their parents and siblings
they are easier to find.

be a royal pain to do so. If you put all your Legacy data in a subdirectory
off the root directory (and not in "My Documents") you can avoid all that
and make it very easy to share data or temporarily move data WITHOUT losing
all your picture links.
Just something to keep in mind if you're thinking about reorganizing the way
photos and links are stored on your computer.

It sounds like you are using the Legacy default locations, these
are subdirectories of the Legacy program location, they are named
data for the data files, pictures, sound and video are for media
files. Personally I do not like that structure because it makes
creating computer backups are more difficult.
I have moved all my Legacy files to a subdirectory tree of the
"My Documents Folder" named "Legacy Data". When I want to backup
my data everything is in one place. I wish Legacy did this on
installation but it doesn't. I do use the same division into
separate directories for data and media. I keep all my Data files
in the same Data subdirectory but I have subdivided the pictures
directory into subdirectory trees organized by family groups i.e
my Maternal and Paternal line and my Wife's Maternal and Paternal
lines are all in separate tree structures. If I ever start
collecting sound and video I will organize those the same way.
In your case you might want to set up directories for each of the
separate families with data, picture, sound and video
subdirectories in each. Now all the data for each of your five
distinct families will be in one directory structure and you can
copy, move and backup each one separately.
