The ¦ sign I referred to as the 'pipe' in England - in that it was used in DOS for doing things like pausing a screen run - is the very top L key next to 1. As Glen says, the one we need is bottom L, with \ Other US/UK keyboard differences are in the $, @ etc. There are several.
