Thanks Matt and the others who proposed some ideas for a work-around to my location name quandary in charts.

Matt, your suggestion of using the search and replace will certainly help with the "County" vs. "Co." shortening. However, the state names are also long and I would have to do 50 search/replace repetitions to fix that, and then 50 more to change them back after I print my pedigree chart.

I realize that I could use the two letter state abbreviations, but as so many on this list have pointed out, they can be confusing to those who are unfamiliar with the states. Also, I do like the way the spelled-out states look in reports - just not in my charts.

Actually, what would be great is a button on the Search and Replace screen which would let the user search on "Lists-Location Short" and replace all states with their 2-letter shortened form. After the chart is printed, the user could search again and replace with the spelled-out name. This would be very workable to me!

Anyone else want to see this considered? How does everyone else deal with this issue now?

You don't even need to use the expand/ contract feature to achieve this.
Simply use Search and Replace on Short Location names

Replace "County, " with "Co., " Note the space after the comma. All my
locations were done this way, including the Abbreviated State, before the
Expand?contract feature was added. When I used it, it messed everything
up. Don't forget to Backup before you do any global Search and Replace.
This is what saved me from the Expand/Contract fiasco
