Virginia, if you use the long name for reports, you will potentially have to
deal with those pesky place holder commas in your locations with missing
cities (when only the county is known), or missing counties (in areas which
are in a city, but not in a county).
A few of my long location names with 4 place holders look like:
1) Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia, USA (all 4 components)
2) , Decatur County, Georgia, USA (lived in the county, but not the city)
3) Danville, , Virginia, USA (city where there is no corresponding county)
4) Bainbridge - Oak City Cemetery, Decatur County, Georgia, USA (cemetery in
a city - notice the dash instead of a comma)
Those same locations look like this in their short form:
1) Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia
2) Decatur County, Georgia
3) Danville, Virginia
4) Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia - Oak City Cemetery
All of these look fairly good in reports (to me).
How I would like to see them in charts:
1) Bainbridge, Decatur Co., GA
2) Decatur Co., GA
3) Danville, VA
4) (the cemetery location would probably not land in a chart)
The only changes between the "short location" format and the proposed
"chart" format are:
1) the word County is shortened (which I can accomplish with a temporary
Search & Replace
2) the state names are all contracted to their two-letter abbreviation
(which I cannot accomplish in Legacy without a lot of hassle)
For now, I am just living with ugly charts because I don't want to pay for
an add-on right now (too many other goodies I want more!). However, I am
convinced that adding option #2 above would not be that hard for Legacy to
implement, and it sure would help me (and hopefully others) out a lot!
Virginia, good luck with your own location formatting. I see that I have
now have 967 locations, all with cutomized short locations, in my database.
Yowsa!

Dennis--What I would like is one name for charts and another one for
reports. However, I think if I abandon the contract/expand function (as
someone suggested) I could use the "long" name for reports and the "short"
name for charts. But it would be necessary to go in and add USA to every
location if you want a proper sort of locations would it not?
