Your enquiry really interests me as I have had the same discussion with my
brother in law this afternoon. He would use the term Granduncle whereas I
have always used Greatuncle.
Like you I looked it up in a dictionary (UK) and it says the two terms are
synonymous. However if the mother's uncle is the Greatuncle then what is
the title of the mother's father wrt the (?)nephew?
