Carol,

If you do get a fireproof safe, make sure it's "Media Safe". Most
fireproof safes are good for paper but media such as CD or floppy will be
ruined long before the paper is ruined. Also be aware that safes are only
rated for X minutes. (I think for a "typical" fire you may only get a 30
minute rating) Here's something obvious too ... You have to remember to PUT
stuff in the safe! (how many houses have you personally had burn? It's
easy to get complacent)

We have a fireproof safe for househould documents and it's better than
nothing and a lot more convenient that a safe deposit box, but anything you
absolutely can't bear to lose you're better off putting offsite. (And
perhaps more than one copy in different locations)

This is kind of a "hot" topic (pun intended) at our place at the moment...
We just got through dealing with woods and pasture fires started by a
careless neighbor that tried to do a controlled burn on his property even
though a no burn order was in effect... Got about 150 feet from the house,
about 40-50 acres burned. Guess who made sure we had an offsite backup
after the fact?

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] flash drives for backup

I use my 1.0 GB Flash-Drive to store my data so I can use it with either my
lap-top or desk-top computers. Then, once a week, I back it up to a CD, and
monthly to an 80 GB portable disk drive. I don't use labels on the CDs, and
make them with a felt-tipped Sharpie.

The one thing I should do, but don't, is find a place for "off-site"
storage? Another suggestion is to store the back-ups in a fire-proof
safe...
