I'm a newbie to this list and am intrigued/surprise by
the comments related to Research Guidance.

I've used GenSmarts for quite some time, and have
really enjoyed it. So I took a look at Research
Guidance. The differences are astounding:

1. GenSmarts lists a lot of suggestions, but they are
not categorized or ranked in any order. Therefore, I
could being going through its checklist, starting with
the worst sources first, just because they're at the
top of the list. Legacy prioritizes these sources so
the best ones are at the top of the list. AND I can
select my goal (birth, death, marriage, parents, etc.)
and either new sources appear, or some of the same
ones appear, but again, they're ranked in the right
order. Again, GenSmarts is just one big long list.

2. The county history list is unmatched anywhere. This
is something that GenSmarts does not have. Even the
well-known bibliographies of county histories does not
contain what Legacy does here. True, most of the
county history list is for the U.S. though. But Legacy
suggests county histories that the Library of Congress
and the Family History Library do not have in their
collections.

3. I've been researching for many, many years. While
everything that GenSmarts and Legacy suggests isn't
helpful, it is always good to have a checklist for
each person so I don't forget something. It's easy to
forget to check a particular state census. Legacy
lists these state censuses, whereas I don't remember
GenSmarts doing so.

4. I agree that Legacy's Research Guidance is slightly
more challenging to use, but that's probably because
it does so much more. Just click on the video tutorial
button on the RG page and you'll get a nice overview.
Armed with this 10 minutes of instruction, it's tough
to think to use GenSmarts as my sole guidance program.

Just my two cents.
