I enter a Master Source for each newspaper: Bedford Gazette (Bedford,
Bedford County, Pennsylvania). This is in the Source Name Field, and I
mark the newspaper name to be italicized. Then in the citation detail
I put something like: Malinda (McVicker) Powell obituary, 19 August
1948, p. 2, col. 1. So the citation reads "Bedford Gazette (Bedford,
Bedford County, Pennsylvania), Malinda (McVicker) Powell obituary, 19
August 1948, p. 2, col. 1."
Then I copy the text into an event called Obituary. I put the
newspaper name in the Description field.
The event sentence definition is: [HisHer] obituary was published in the
«i»[Desc]«/i» [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [CR][Notes]
So I get a sentence that reads something like "Her obituary was
published in the Bedford Gazette on 19 Aug 1948 in Bedford, Bedford Co.,
PA." And the event notes follow with the obit text in them.
In events for the children, etc., I use an event called "Mentioned In,"
and in the description field I enter: Malinda (McVicker) Powell's
obituary. And in the event notes I enter: She was named as Mrs. Sebert
A. Slick of Windber, surviving daughter. The event sentence definition
is: [HeShe] was mentioned in [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]
So the sentence for Malinda's daughter reads: "She was mentioned in
Malinda (McVicker) Powell's obituary on 19 Aug 1948 in Bedford, Bedford
Co., PA.1 She was named as Mrs. Sebert A. Slick of Windber, surviving
daughter." And I source this event as already noted above.
This gives me the key information right there in the events for the
people mentioned in the obit (how their name & residence was given, what
relationshgip was or wasn't stated), without repeating the obit text
over and over. And it's easy to see at a glance from the event list that
a person is well documented by mention in several family member's obits
over a period of time. The clipboard makes this data entry much easier,
and the process keeps me from overlooking name & residence clues of the
other people mentioned in the obit.
I use the "Mentioned In" event in the marriage events of the deceased's
parents too - gives me a nice record of documents that do (or don't)
show the mother's maiden name.
