Well, I was busy answering problem reports submitted via our web site yesterday <rbg>.

I think you may have to go to Options > Customize > Launch. In the lower part of the screen there is an option on whether Legacy should use its built-in sound and video player or the default Windows Media Player. When I tested WMA files before posting to the earlier thread, WMA files did launch with WMP because my option is set to use the Default Media Player.

Please excuse this posting that was previously answered in part, but
I've not gotten a reply to my follow-up to Brian, so thought I'd present
the question to the entire list. Perhaps others have experienced the
same problem and can recommend a more detailed solution.

My problem is contained in the bottom email of this thread.
Essentially, I can't get Legacy to read any other sound file except WAV
files. However, all sound files open successfully in my default player,
Windows Media Player.

I welcome any suggestions on how to make adjustments needed to my
default settings in order to have Legacy read WMA (or MP3) files.

I would also welcome suggestions of which file format you believe is
best over the long haul (WMA, WAV, MP3). WAV appears to create the
largest file size, WMA the smallest file size, and MP3 may arguably be
more universally accepted. Thus, to me each has their merits and
demerits...as with life. Would like to hear your opinion and rationale
for selecting the sound file format you chose.
Thanks
Gary

I have tried repeatedly to open WMA sound files in Legacy. The only
files I am able to open from Legacy are WAV files.

Yes, you are correct. In order to even see WMA files I must first
select "All Files". When I then select a WMA file to attach to my
Legacy person, all appears to be in order. However, when I double click
the "Sound" icon, I get nothing but silence. I also get nothing but
silence when I click "Play".

Windows Media Player is my default player. Both WMA and WAV files
automatically open and begin playing in Windows Media Player.

Why won't Legacy recognize WMA files?
Gary

Actually, any sound file for which you have a default player will work
in Legacy. I just attached an MP3 file and was able to play it because
Windows Media player is the default windows player for those files and
Legacy opened that when I double clicked on the sound file Icon in the
Picture centre. WMA files also worked. You may have to switch the file
setting from "Sound Files" to "All Files" to see them since Legacy only
looks for mp3, Midi and Wav in it's defined sound file drop down list.

Subject: Sound Files

I'm about to enter the world of sound using Legacy by adding digitized
voice recordings. Hopefully before too long I will also go down the
video road.

I have just finished re-recording all my old cassette tapes into a new
digital recorder and have uploaded these new files into my computer.
They are all .WMA files. I also have the needed plug-in to convert .WMA
files to .MP3 format if necessary.

However, if I understand Legacy correctly, the only sound files I can
use with it are .WAV format. Is this correct? Does anyone know of a
common way to convert .WMA or .MP3 files to .WAV? Or is there another
work around. Can anyone comment on the advantages/disadvantages of
either of these 3 sound formats?

What Legacy provides is a great resource. I'm finding myself though
having to become proficient in areas I've not otherwise had much
experience...image files, sound files, video files, pdf files. All
good.

Thanks again for your advice.
Gary
