Hi Jenny,
Right click on the name of the person you wish to be the preferred child and
you will see a pop-up with "set 'name' as preferred Child". Click on that
and a star will appear against the name in the Family View.

... is that the Preferred Child was indicated in some way on the list of
children in Family View.
Sometimes I find myself looking at a Family View where the Husband and Wife
are the parents several children, one of whom married one of my relatives,
but I can't for the life of me remember which one it was.
Although I don't follow the lines of non-blood-related people extensively,
I do often include the spouses of the siblings of an in-law, so just
looking to see which one is indicated as having married is no help. It
would be very useful to be able set "my in-law" as the Preferred Child and
then see this indicated in Family View as well as in Child View.
Or perhaps you can do this and I have just missed a trick somewhere?
