Peter,

Forgive me if my answer duplicates someone else's... I don't have access to
the full thread at the moment!

The short version: Have you looked into the 'add comments' feature of pdf files?

The longer version...

What is your purpose in communicating with others? Are you hoping they'll
supply you with additional data, or are you sharing *your* research because
they're interested? (If they are also doing genealogy work, the answer's easy.
You and they can intelligently discuss data transfer methods.)

It may be you want to share with them first, give them perspective on their
own family area. Create the relevant report as a pdf file (or set of pdf
files). Email as attachment(s). Provide instructions for obtaining the free
Acrobat reader.

When you're asking for information back, you have several options. I
personally have found that a plain old email conversation works best - passing
plain text back and forth. However, you could create a word doc for them to
fill out, or print and (overseas) fax. Legacy, I believe, will create custom
questionnaires for you (I haven't used that feature yet).

I'm not sure what Acrobat versions are required, but one thing we do here in
the office, is add comments to the pdf file itself. The reviewer then sends
the pdf file back to the author, and the author can handle each comment
individually. It's exactly like adding a "sticky note" to a printed copy. This
little balloon symbol points to the exact point the comment applies. Or, you
can highlight a piece of text (such as grandfather's name) and comment on that
specific passage.
