Pete: For my *shire* question, I was actually referring to the Individual Information screen where I input the data. I use the comma placeholders as recommended by Legacy, but don't know how many to put before or after the name of the shire--if that's all I have.

If you enter the Whatevershire into the "State" box, you'll find that you get a heap of answers that have no "County", but have "England" as the country. If you enter Whatevershire into the "County" box, you get a heap of answers that have "England" as the state and "United Kingdom" as the country. This seems to tally with the other answer you had about "State" being the "next tier of government", but the multiple possibilities mean that you can mostly take your pick. I guess that historically the United Kingdom appeared relatively recently (so the England version may be technically more accurate) - but I'm afraid that my knowledge of UK history isn't good enough to know when that was (despite being from the UK!) and I tend to use UK regardless.
