Sorry for chiming in late on this topic. I have found that, within a certain time period (both in my family and my fiance's family) it seemed to be common to use the middle name rather than the first name. I can't tell you how many times I have searched for someone in the census, sometimes entire families, and found them all enumerated under their middle names. It seemed to be most common in the 1880 US Census. (Again, this is for my and my fiance's families.)
