Hello Legacy User Group!
Just wanted to throw out a "how to" question to the group to see if anyone
can suggest a "best practice" method for the following issue:
My mother was born with the last name of Soncrant, which is how I entered
her information into Legacy 6. When her mother divorced and remarried, her
new husband adopted my mother and her last name became Armbruster. When my
mom and dad married, her last name changed again to Hosmer.
Mike,
For now, Diane's advice to cover the situation in Notes is about the
best you can do. I'm aware of one program, the now pretty much
defunct Relatively Yours, that tried to address this issue. RY
tracked people's names at different times and at different events in
their lives. But it really didn't work that well. What I would like
to see is the ability to link in an existing person by their AKA
rather than birth name. For example, in your case, she was born
Soncrant and added to her parents that way. When she was adopted as
Armbruster, an AKA with a note fully describing the situation would be
set up. Then, when she married, she could be linked to her husband by
her legal name at the time of the marriage. Reports would be clean
and the linkage back to birth name would be preserved. The best way
I've come up with to handle this kind of situation is to set up an
Alt-Name event and describe it there. Marriage events are still
stated incorrectly in reports but the event is printed after it to
describe what happened.
