Hello!

I'm recently bought lego mindstorm set. What I use for testing:
- Laptop with Linux (Debian unstable) with kernel 2.6.16
- LeJOS from CVS (the only version that works properly with USB tower)
- Few shell scripts written by myself to ease compilation/upload/run process

After few days of trying misc things, I've encountered a major problem: maximum
range of IR direct communication is VERY SMALL... for both: Windows (where
original drivers are in use, with IR power setting from Control Panel applet),
and with Linux (where legousbtower.ko driver is in use, with my modification to
IR power setting, partly from 0.5.3 version of this driver and partly from
sniffing USB packets in Windows).

In both OS while IR power was set to low, medium and high, the maximum
communication range with no external artificial light was maximum 2-3m. With
external light turned on, maximum range was abaut 1-1,5m. When uploading a
program or firmware to RCX, maximum distance between tower and RCX was about
10-15cm, and even then uploading is failing in 9 for 10 tries. Successful
upload can be achieved everytime when I've tower and RCX covered by something,
cutted out from external world.

My problem is: How to build a robot which uses Vision Command classes and XCam2
wireless camera (with radio range 10-20m), when maximum possible range between
robot and IR Tower is something about 2m? Even original Vision Command USB
camera has longer cable... How can I amplify power of IR tower, to extend the
communication range?

The OS is not important (I prefer Linux when both are possible), but what I
need is a IR communication range 5m or more.

Any ideas? Somebody?

Best regards
Szymon Madej
