Your setting of type and mode appear correct. I assume you are activating the sensor. Because the raw values jump the hardware is probably OK. My guess is that you are using LCD.showNumber(Sensor.S1.readValue()); which will display 9999 when the sensor reading is negative. I hope this solves your problem.
