I also putted the lejos_nxt extraction in my /Application/development directory.

The folder where you put it in after downloading doesn't matter (as i
think), because the make and configure tools will install it in the
system-environment (god knows where).
So, just download and run the tools.

Lejos works with the bluez-library. The guys who develop have no
MacOS-Version of BlueZ. So we can't use it unter MacOS. I googled a
little bit for any alternative, but that was not successful yet.

For my part, I could compile, and successfully run nxjflash and can
put the firmware on my NXT but I can't get nxjlink or nxjupload to
work. But I even did not use the .diff file out of the forum.
