Friends:

I'd like to say thanks to list members who are helping us set up a
Power Mac G4 server here at Low End Mac headquarters. The original
plan was to upgrade to Comcast Business and host Low End Mac here to
save on hosting fees, but several people pointed out the danger of
down time due to power outages.

We typically have at least one power outage of 4-8 hours every year, a
few off less than two hours, and several brief ones (under 10 minutes)
that we can ride out with a UPS. Problem is that if this happens at
night or when I'm away from home, LEM could be down for hours on end.
That would mean a loss of income, since most of that is generated by
displaying ads.

Instead, we're setting up a development server that may also function
as a mirror of lowendmac.com just in case our primary server has
problems. We'll also be hosting a few low traffic sites that don't
make us money, saving us a bit on hosting fees every month.

We have received a Digital Audio Power Mac, a 1.8 GHz dual G4 upgrade
from Giga Designs, and promises of RAM and retired copies of Mac OS X.
I'm in the process of benchmarking the Power Mac with its 533 MHz CPU
and ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card for publication on LEM today.

I have run into a problem with the Giga Designs upgrade. I've tried to
install the firmware update software on our Mystic as well as the
Digital Audio after making sure that each Mac had up-to-date firmware.
Whether I boot into Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4.11, or 10.5.6, the updater
reaches a certain point and goes no further. If any of you have tips,
I'd be most grateful.

If I can get this 1.8 GHz dual G4 upgrade working, we may further
change our plans and turn it into our production machine, replacing
our dual 1 GHz MDD Power Mac G4, which would then become our in-house
server. (Alas, the upgrade doesn't work with the 167 MHz bus in the
MDD Power Mac.) We'll see what happens with this upgrade.

Thanks again to many generous list members for their support.
