This is a three port Firewire 800 hub. One port goes to your Mac leaving your with two ports for your drives or other FW devices. My iMac (older model) has a single FW800 port and while you can daisy chain FW drives, every drive I ever had required you to turn on each drive in the chain to get to the drives after it. So if you needed to access drive #3 in the chain, you had to turn on both drives in front of it. So I bought this hub to allow me two drives or two separate chains to be operated independently of each other. However over time having less need for FW drives (I used to do a lot of video work with tape based camcorders that needed FW for transfer), I have sold off most of my old FW drives and took the hub out of service sometime last year or two ago. Just found it in my stash and figure I should offer it up to one of you still using a stable of FW drives. This repeater can use a DC adapter to power the ports (it was never included, was an optional accessory) but since all my drives has their own power supplies I always used it bus powered (just the cable from the computer to the hub and then two cables out to the drives). Worked great and never had issues with it. This is completely backwards compatible with FW400 drives and devices as well. You only need FW400 to FW800 cables or adapters. I have number of both FW400 and FW800 cables including ones with FW400 on one end and FW800 on the other. I can provide some of these with the repeater/hub to match what you need.
