I have two 8-core Mac Pros that I no longer need. Both are overall in good working condition but have some issues that keep them from being perfect.
The first is a 2008 3,1 2.8ghz 8-core model. It has 32GB of RAM (PC2-5300F with normal non-Apple heat sinks), two SuperDrives (one Apple and one aftermarket), a 500GB hard drive, and a Radeon 2600 XT. It also has AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth installed. This has been my primary machine for the past few years and it’s still very capable as a graphics workstation, but there are two minor issues with it: First, it previously suffered some shipping damage. The bottom legs are crushed and the front panel is dented. It still stands on its own and doesn’t fall over, but it leans at an angle unless propped against a wall or desk. Also due to the front panel dents the SuperDrive doors are jammed open, but the SuperDrives themselves still open and close with no issues. The damage is entirely cosmetic: it still works great, none of the internals were affected, and the chassis itself is still square and structurally sound, but to be honest it’s a bit ugly to look at. Second, I think the power supply might be acting up. Sometimes (very rarely and unpredictably) it will refuse to boot, with fans at full speed and all RAM error lights on. The solution to this seems to be to unplug it for a while, after which it will boot normally. I’ve had a lot of trouble trying to track down this issue, so far all I’ve found is one forum post with the same issue and no replies, but I suspect the capacitors in the power supply are the cause. I want to emphasize that this issue is *very* unpredictable and only happens every once in a while, I think it has been close to two years since the last time it happened, but I don’t want to sell the computer without a warning that it might happen again. Also as far as I can tell it seems to be caused by leaving the computer off and plugged in, so if you leave it on and in sleep mode or unplug it every time you shut down it tends to boot normally every time. It has all hard drive trays, but it’s missing a couple hard drive screws (it still has enough to hold all four drives securely). I can install Mavericks, Yosemite, or El Capitan or leave the drive blank. Or for an extra $50 I can set up a Fusion drive (1TB hard drive and 120GB SSD, fully supported under Mountain Lion and newer). The second machine is a 2006 1,1 that has been upgraded to 2,1 firmware and 2.66ghz X5355 quad core processors, for 8 total cores. This one has 16GB of RAM (with normal non-Apple heat sinks), 500GB hard drive, two aftermarket SuperDrives (one dual layer and one single layer), and AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth installed. The stock GeForce 7300 is dead, and will either need to be repaired or replaced (two capacitors were bulging so I replaced them, but it still wouldn’t show any video and upon further inspection it looks like a surface mount component is missing and I can’t figure out what it was). I will throw in a Radeon HD 5450, it’s a basic PC graphics card but I was able to get it to work under OS X using the included kext drivers. You would still need to find a way to install the OS and drivers, though, as it won’t show a picture until the drivers are installed. It only has one hard drive tray, but if you need more right away and don’t care how they look I can try to 3D print some replacement trays (you would still need to track down some screws though). Overall it’s in good condition with no major dents (just one minor ding in the front panel) and it is very clean inside. I don’t have any OS discs to include and this won’t run the free OSes natively so per list rules the drive will be blank. I’m asking $200 for the 3,1, $175 for the 1,1, or $350 for both, but I’m definitely open to offers. I would greatly prefer local sales in the Houston area, as I’d rather avoid shipping something so heavy and fragile, but I am still willing to ship if I can’t find anyone local so contact me for an estimate. I’m also open to whole or partial trades for one or both if you are local. The main things I’m looking for right now are a Core i-series laptop or Mac Mini, but feel free to just make an offer, even if it’s not something I want/need I will still consider it just to avoid having to ship a Mac Pro. And just to keep my options open I’ll also consider non-local trades but that would be a last resort. And, finally, if I don’t get any other interest I might consider parting them out, but that’s a worst case scenario. If you only need certain parts make an offer and I will get back to you. I only accept PayPal, unless you are local in which case I would take cash. If you have any questions or want to see pictures let me know.
