AFP. 25 November 2001. Three more policemen killed in Nepal by Maoist
rebels.

KATHMANDU -- At least 49 people -- most of them from the security forces
-- have been killed in a series of attacks launched by Maoist rebels in
Nepal, officials and reports said Sunday.

In the latest incident to be reported, state radio said three policemen
were killed in a shootout with the rebels late Saturday in Sunsari
district, 298 kilometres (186 miles) southeast of the capital.

Police and rebels also clashed Saturday in Ilam district, 390 kilometres
northeast of Kathmandu, but there were no reports of casualties, the
radio said.

Six other policemen were killed Saturday when the rebels ambushed a bus
carrying 44 policemen in the southwestern Surkhet district, police said.

And 40 more people were killed in other attacks late Friday, when the
rebels unilaterally broke a ceasefire agreed in July.

The dead included 14 soldiers, 24 policemen and two civilians, killed in
the western Dang and Syangja districts.

About 80 rebels were also believed to have been killed in the attacks
but this has not been confirmed.

The rebels had also stolen 99 semi-automatic rifles.

In another attack Saturday night, the rebels blew up a hydropower
station at Khopasi, 68 kilometres (42 miles) east of here, the radio
report said.

Police said they had arrested more than a dozen Maoists, including some
senior leaders, in Kathmandu on Sunday.

And border guards at Suthauli on the southwestern border with India
confiscated more than 3,000 units of detonators and explosive fuses from
two Nepalese crossing from India, the state radio reported.
