I updated my tutorial because you're not the only one having trouble with finding suitable buildings: It is okay if you take distortion pictures at smaller distances. Avoid distances smaller than one metre though. Only a few lenses exhibit a strong distance-dependence of distortion and TCA.
Taking pictures of leafless trees for TCA is okay as long as they are not overexposed. Avoid outshined edges. I would recommend night sky calibration only for fisheyes.
