I bet the intent of that command is for people receiving emails
then working offline, so they have everything locally once they can look at it.
Or even to avoid the slight delays of downloading/transferring when on the 
internet.

I've been using git some, and I imagine a lot of the terminology is the same.
Merging is possible to any repository or branch, so the meaning is  not
necessarily relative to one central repos.
