Well, this is exciting.  The simple workaround, which I recommend, is always
to open unitTest.leo separately.  I'll put this on the bug list for Leo 4.5,
but there are no guarantees that fixing this will actually happen.

I also unhappily discovered that any file named somedoc.leo.bak will
> get deleted whenever you save a file named somedoc.leo.


I'll fix this in Leo 4.5.
