Thanks for this investigation. I'll leave it up to you how much you
want to explore the speed aspect. Imo, speed is acceptable as is. In
any case, correctness matters a *lot* more than a diff of 1% in speed.
Still, as an old speed addict (insert AA joke here), I'm always
curious, so if you can, for example, find some way of using timeit to
see what is going on, I'll be interested.
