I'm glad you asked.  You get the when you clone a node in an @auto tree.
When you next reload the tree the original node (in the @auto tree) won't
exist (it won't have the old tnode) and you will get this message when tying
to associate the clone outside the @auto tree with the node in the @auto
tree.

It's conceivable that some "hidden machinery" could be added to the @auto
node itself, just like in @thin nodes.  However, just now I am much more
interested in getting the shadow plugin working really well.  I'll say more
about mod_shadow shortly.
