I took a small detour and fixed most pylint complaints.  This resulted
in a lot of cruft being commented out.  More importantly, it
highlights code that can be eliminated or that still remains to write.

Ville, I found during this process that you had changed the log.put
and log.putnl methods.  I suspect these changes were not correct.  Tab
completion requires some smarts in these methods so that output can be
sent to the 'Completions' tab.  No big deal, but I wanted to alert you
that there is more to these methods than meets the eye.
