It's quite easy, actually.

Say that you have foo.leo. Create a folder foo.leo.hist next to it,
and have every edited node in a file in that directory (use gnx as
file name). Every time you save the .leo document, write over the gnx
file and check it in ("ci ville.hfudhfudhf". ci is rcs for "check
in").

Instead of rcs, you could use cvs. The main point here is that every
file has its own independent history (as opposed to full-tree history
used by modern vcs's).
