Yesterday I did a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10--the old version was
gradually becoming unusable and unfixable. Imo, 8.10 solves all the
problems with keyboard, screen and wireless access that have bothered
me in the past:

- An extremely annoying problem with the right Alt key has
disappeared.

- The screen resolution was properly set at installation.

- Video and wireless worked after installing automatically recommended
drivers.

Perhaps the instabilities with earlier version contributed to my
former woes. In any case, I would, for the first time ever, seriously
consider recommending Ubuntu to unsophisticated computer users.

I've installed bzr and Leo branches, but have not looked at them
closely. The clean install wiped out my previous partition, so it
will be some time before all is as before.
