Thanks. I haven't taken the time to learn how to access the development versions.
After some additional experimentation, it seems that the issue is not related to the presence or absence of the CSS files. The script could run on various subsets of the child nodes but just choked when I put them all together. Not really sure why but at least, for now, I can build my TEX output in stages.
