They already are persistent.

For any <v> element in a .leo file (including <v> elements for @auto nodes)
the 't' attribute is the gnx of the corresponding <t> element. This gnx is
also the 'tx' attribute of the <t> element.

In other words, the gnx's form xml "links" between <v> elements and <t>
elements.  Leo's sax read code uses these links to associate vnodes with
tnode.
