The checksum would be computed from the (plain) contents of the external file, but the cached data would be **the corresponding Leo outline**. Thus, when the checksum matched, the read logic would recreate the outline from the cache by unpickling. I would guess this would be *much* faster than the read logic in leoAtFile.py. In other words, I'm surprised I don't see folders for external files in the ~/.leo/db.
