I simplified the tree of xsimple.c (the shadow file) to be:

//@+leo-ver=4-thin
//@+node:Gil.20100104180550.2581:@shadow simple.c
hello

//@+others
//@+node:Gil.20100104180550.2582:world
world
//@nonl
//@-node:Gil.20100104180550.2582:world
//@-others

!
//@nonl
//@-node:Gil.20100104180550.2581:@shadow simple.c
//@-leo

The public is trivial (and indeed it is not a valid c file, just an
example).

Now if one exits Leo, adds a single space in every line in the public
file, and re-opens Leo, the error is:

updated private H:\temp\.leo_shadow\xsimple.c from public H:\temp
\simple.c
reading: @shadow simple.c
----- read error. line: 9, file: simple.c
unexpected @nonl directive in code part
