I believe Kent was aiming for what XPath describes as the node's 'preceding-siblings' axis. But perhaps you weren't really trying to clarify so much as just take the opportunity to refer to "the "node's aunts and uncles" 8-) Hmm, what's the gender neutral form of aunt and uncle... Google doesn't provide one (although other languages (French, Italian) seem to have gender neutral plural terms for a group of aunts and uncles).
