Re: visibility of sentinels I too have a tendency to think of them as garbage, or at least a nuisance, on those occasions when I'm using other tools to look at the files. Every editor worth it's salt has syntax coloring dictionaries and those dictionaries are often submitted or maintained by people outside the core developer team, but don't have to be installed as an addon or plugin. Perhaps simply extend a handful of key dictionaries in high profile editors like vim and scintilla to render sentinels in a muted grey? Visible but not in your face. I would think this would be easier to sell, and build, than a plugin to actually hide the sentinels (which could come later).
