I successfully use @url nodes for opening file system files as well as
internet URLs.  It does temporarily spawn a web browser that
disappears almost immediately before the file even opens.

e.g.  @url "file:\\C:\foodir\document.pdf"

It sounds like @mime might be a little cleaner though, with support
for @path.

I noticed that you mention GTD in your post.  I'm just ramping up in
my learning of GTD principles and workflow.  I'm interested in
learning more about how you are using leo as a GTD tool, if you are
willing to share some of your insights.
